About the Org

Film Night, a brief history

Film Night is a community-based organization that has produced film-related events in San Anselmo, California,  since the early 1990’s. One of its early successes was CAFFE NUVO FILM NIGHT, a monthly film forum held at a small café in San Anselmo. The film forums presented the work of many different community filmmakers, from students with super 8 shorts, to professional filmmakers working on feature length films.

Film Night included screenings of important classic films to its line up in 1991. These screenings grew in popularity and in 1992 the organization started FILM NIGHT IN THE PARK.

This annual film festival takes place outside, at Creek Park, on warm summer evenings and has expanded as its popularity has grown. In 1997 it had an average audience of 200 people per night, with a crowd of over 300 on its opening night screening of CINEMA PARADISO. A dedicated staff of volunteers from around Marin County produces the festival. Tom Boss, the director of Film Night events, founded the organization 1991.

Over the years Film Night has screened important films like Fritz Lang’s "M", Robert Mulligan’s "To Kill A Mockingbird" and Stanley Kubrick’s "Dr. Strangelove." Other screenings include classics from Frank Capra "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington," "Arsenic And Old Lace" and "It’s A Wonderful Life," as well as the Humphrey Bogart films "The African Queen," "The Maltese Falcon" and "Treasure Of The Sierra Madre." It shows films from Rob Reiner’s "The Princess Bride," to the Marx Brother’s "Ducksoup" to cater to its younger audience members. A tradition has formed of closing each year’s festival with an Alfred Hitchcock film.

Film Night plans to open a small, comfortable movie theater in downtown San Anselmo that would have an emphasis on preserving film heritage. The theater would have an excellent programming schedule of classic and family oriented movies, in a screening room atmosphere. All shows would include informative introductions, with a cartoon or short film before the picture. It would also provide a space for student and independent filmmakers to show their work before an audience. The theater would not compete, but would complement existing movie theaters, in this county where so many people enjoy the art form of Motion Pictures.
