A Film Night Theater

THE FILM NIGHT THEATER PROJECT

In 1924 the Tamalpais Community Associates built and opened the Tamalpais Community Theater. The 1000 seat facility included a kitchen, a $25,000 organ and was managed by the Blumenfeld family. The theater would fill up on weekend evenings with town's folk, out to see the latest Hollywood offering. It was also a gathering place for other events, including the Drake High School Graduation Ceremony. The theater stayed in operation for 65 years until 1989, when the Loma Prieta earthquake closed its doors for good. The theater was torn down a few years later, but the facade still remains.

Film Night is planning to bring a Movie Theater back to San Anselmo, California, with a goal of preserving film heritage. The theater would provide a home for the Film Night organization to continue its programming all year long as well as revitalize the once vibrant downtown area at night. Film Night has identified a number of suitable sites for a theater of around 100 seats. Unlike the 1000 seat Tamalpais Theater, Film Night plan to build a small theater in an existing downtown building. The theater would have comfortable seats, state of the art sound and projection equipment and would have the feel of a large screening room.  The theater would be open in the evenings, with matinee screenings for children on the weekends.

Theater programming would include screenings of classic and contemporary films with some artistic quality or other importance to the motion picture arts. The theatert would have series as well as mixed screenings. Film Series would have a theme, Westerns, Screwball Comedies, Film Noir, Films of Humphrey Bogart, an Alfred Hitchcock Festival, etc. These series would include informative introductions from a variety of people, from filmmakers to film historians. Mixed screenings would include selected works with no theme and viewer’s choice screenings.
