This great family film was created by Bay Area filmmaker Carroll Ballard and produced by Francis Ford Coppola.

The best horse movie ever made!
This is one of my favorite movies. It's about a Boy(Kelly Reno) who is traveling in a ship with his father. There's a storm and they are shipwrecked. The next morning, the boy wakes up on an island. What follows is a very long scene(About 25 Min.)in which the boy becomes friends with a black stallion. This scene is a delight to watch. The scariest part of it was when a cobra comes in front of the boy. The stallion saves the boy's life when he tramples on the cobra.

He is then rescued by fishermen but he refuses to leave the island without the horse. Once the horse and the boy are home, there is trouble. A back yard is no place to keep a horse-esp. a wild one like the black. The horse runs away and ends up on a farm owned by a former jockey(Mickey Rooney). He then proceeds to train the boy and the horse for a race. The race scene at the end is by far the best horse race ever filmed.

There's one point I need to make-according to the "goofs" section, the people in the stands are wearing modern clothes. The story is set in the 1940's. This movie was made in the late 70's, the movie studios were in financial difficulty. The people in the stands were extras-and there were thousands of them there. To dress them all up in 1940's attire would have cost many thousands of dollars-so they came in their own clothes. The studio could not afford to spend that much money for thousands of extras.
