2005 NR In the 1970s, some Marin free thinkers began riding fat tire cruisers (circa 1930-50s) fast down steep dirt fire roads on and around Mt. Tamalpais, eventually cobbling together a hybrid with gears to tackle the uphill. Because these bikes were mostly recycled from the discard bin and had a propensity to rattle (or look the part), the riders affectionately referred to them as their "clunkers. Producer Bill Savage illustrates his story with the joyful memories of those present at the birth Joe Breeze, Gary Fisher, Charlie Kelly, Otis Guy, Wende Cragg, Tom Ritchey, and plenty of others. Savage even tracked down former members of the pioneering Morrow Dirt Club, who blew everyones minds and then disappeared for 20 years. |
