Kubrick was one of the great movie directors, surely the greatest living director before
his untimely death last week. His movies teach us about ourselves, not through history
lessons, but through his use of the medium as a tool for communicating. Watch DR.
STRANGELOVE and you know what it was like to live at the height of the cold
war. PATHS OF GLORY will change the mind of any young man
anxious to go off and fight a war. THE KILLING shows us how
senseless crime is and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE has us asking
"where did we go wrong?" People don't always understand Kubrick's films. When
asked about the meaning of 2001: A SPACE ODESSEY, Kubrick said
"How could we possibly appreciate the Mona Lisa if Leonardo had written at the bottom
of the canvas: 'The lady is smiling because she is hiding a secret from her lover."
Stanley Kubrick died Sunday, March 7th, at his home in England. He was 70 years old. His newest film, EYES WIDE SHUT, is slated for release in July 1999. His next film, AI, was going to be his last and most ambitious movie yet. We will have to imagine what it might have been. Below is a list of Stanley Kubrick related web sites.
