LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

1997    Melampo Cinematografica/Miramax

Roberto Benigni, hailed as Italy's greatest comic treasure, pushes the envelope and gets away with it. Despite dealing with inflammatory subject matter, the actor/writer/director has made a brave, touching, often comical and ultimately sobering love story about a jovial Italian Jew, his wife and child during World War II. When the family is sent to a concentration camp, the resourceful father tries to shield his young son from the horror by turning the experience into a game.
