Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti, The Untouchables) portrays a
scientist named Tyler (based on real-life Canadian author Farley Mowat)
who braves the Arctic, alone, to study behavior of wolves.
Unfamiliar with the wilderness, Tyler finds himself
unprepared for his stay in the frozen desolation. Near death, he is
rescued by a mysterious Eskimo who builds him a shelter and then leaves
without waiting for thanks. Forced to rely on his ingenuity and common
sense, Tyler survives until the spring and sets up camp near a small pack
of wolves, building mutual trust with the leader of the pack. His
now-idyllic surroundings are threatened when a group of caribou hunters
arrives. Based on Farley Mowat's study of wolves for the Ottawa Wildlife
Service, this beautifully photographed wilderness film is as fine as
director Carroll Ballard's previous film, BLACK STALLION. Capturing the
changes a man goes through as he learns about life in the wilds, NEVER CRY
WOLF is very informative, but it is Smith's performance that makes the
film a resounding success. |
