The Adventures of Robin Hood
![]() |
1938 Warner Brothers 102 min. When King Richard the Lion-Hearted (Ian Hunter) is captured by Austrians and held for ransom, evil Prince John (Claude Rains) declares himself ruler of England and makes no attempt to secure Richards safe return. Though John has all the Nobles and their armies on his side, it doesn't sway a lone Saxon knight, Robin Hood (Errol Flynn), who swears his allegiance to Richard and sets out to steal the ransom money from the rich who cross through Sherwood Forest. Olivia de Havilland plays the beautiful Maid Marian who, at first, gives the cold shoulder to prince charming (Hood). Handsome, dashing and athletic, Flynn is everything that Robin Hood should be, with a wicked sense of humor to boot. Eventually Maid Marian falls for Robin Hood and finds herself having to save his life. An excellent cast and great musical score conspire to make this rendition of the Robin Hood legend one of the best. THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD was released in Technicolor in 1938, one year before Gone With the Wind. The film stars Claude Rains (best know as Louie in CASABLANCA) the beautiful Olivia de Havilland (who played Melanie, Ashley Wilke's wife, in GONE WITH THE WIND) Basil Rathbone, (who breathed life into Sherlock Holmes on the big screen) and of course prince charming himself Errol Flynn as Robin Hood. Watch for the great Character actor Eugene Pallette as Frier Tuck. Pallette had many parts in great movies including My Man Godfrey, The Lady Eve, the mark of zorro, Topper and Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's music score won him a much-deserved Oscar. The movie was directed by Michael Curtiz, who's credits as a director include Angles With Dirty Faces, Captain Blood, Four Daughters, Life with Father, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Mildred Pierce, Jim Thorp-All American, White Christmas and of course Casablanca. So relax and get ready for the greatest swashbuckler of them all. Sponsored by 115 Tunstead Avenue 415-453-4322 What happened in 1938?
